

WHAT IS INFERTILITY AND WHEN SHOULD WE SEEK TREATMENT?
Infertility is a condition wherein the couple is not able to conceive after 1 year of regular intercourse if they have never conceived previously. It is present in approximately 15 % of the population. A couple should seek treatment after they have tried naturally for at least 1 year. They may seek earlier treatment if their age is higher (above 30 yrs), if they have associated medical treatment, or have had any significant surgery of genital tract.
MY TUBES ARE BLOCKED – WHAT SHOULD I DO?
If the tubal blockage has been diagnosed on HSG the IVF should undergo a diagnostic laparoscopy. If even the diagnostic laparoscopy confirms tubal block that cannot be corrected by hystereoscopic cannulation or laparoscopic intervention the IVF is the solution. If one tube is patent then few cycles of ovulation induction with or without IUI may be attempted (depending on other clinical factors).
I HAVE HAD TWO MISSCARRIAGES IN PAST – SHOULD I TRY AGAIN? WHAT TETS SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE I CONCEIVE AGAIN?
Abortions or miscarriages can be caused mainly because of genetic abnormality of the fetus , certain blood related/immunological abnormalities of the mother or at times by certain abnormalities of the uterus. It is desirable to get a complete medical and gynecological checkup before attempting a pregnancy. Certain special blood tests as well as hysteroscopy may at times be required. Folic acid may also be started before conception.
I AM 38. WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF BEING PREGNANT?
Generally the rates of natural conception as well as IVF drop with increasing age, the relative chances of getting pregnant can be assessed by antral follicle count , serum FSH and othertests.
MY HUSBAND HAS NO SPERMS. CAN WE HAVE OUR OWN CHILD?
If the absence of sperms is due to blockage of the passage through which the sperms pass then it might be possible to have your own child by IVF ICSI. This is subject to whether sperms can be removed from the testis or not.
I HAVE DONE STERLIZATION OPERATION. CAN IT BE REVERSED?
Yes it can be reversed!! The success rates of recanalization or reversal of sterilization depend upon the condition of left tubes and the .
I HAVE ONE FAILED IVF CYCLE. WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?
One failure does not mean the next will fail too. In fact the cumulative rates are more than a single cycle rate. So if you really want to have a pregnancy don’t be disheartened with one negative result .talk to your Infertologist and plan ahead.
HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD IUI BE DONE?
IUI can be done as many times as possible. But in practice it is usually done 3 to 6 times. If in these many times the patient fails to gat pregnant then IVF is a better option.
WHAT IS BETTER HSG OR DIAGNOSTIC LAPAROSCOPY?
Diagnostic hystero laparoscopy is better as far as visualization of uterus , adnexa and peritoneal factors are concerned. It also allows operative correction of abnormality is deemed necessary. But as a first investigation in cases where tubal blockage or peritoneal causes are not indicated HSG remains the investigation of choice. It is less invasive and cheaper.
WHAT ARE THE SUCCESS RATES OF IVF TREATMENT AND WHAT ARE THE FACTORS AFFECTING IT?
Success rates of IVF vary from centre to centre. The average rates vary between 30 to 40% per cycle .factors affecting success rates are – patient related –age ,cause of infertility , previous cycles , ovarian reserve , medical condition. Lab realted factors are – air quality of lab , expertise of the Infertologist , instrumentation , quality control etc.
WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?
Endometriosis is a disease wherein the galnds which normally form theinnerlinig of the uterine cavity are located outside the uterus itself. The most common site being ovary. This disease leads to infertility ,severe pain in periods and even durung intercourse.
DOES FIBROID AFFECT MY CHANCES OF BEING PREGNANT?
Fibroid has been shown to adversely affect fertility. This is determined by the size, number and location of fibroid. Some mall fibroid away from the uterine cavity may not be affecting your chances of pregnancy. Certain type of fibroids have also been shown to cause miscarriages and pre term births.

WHAT IS IUI?
IUI is a procedure in which male semen is processed to increase the total motile sperm fraction and in instilled in the uterine cavity using thin cathter. This procedure helps in cases where male partner has less or weak sperms or in cases where donar sperms are being used. It is also done in cases of unknown infertility before IVF.
WHAT IS IVF?
IVF is in vitro fertilization. This procedure comprises of producing eggs in the female and retrieving them when they reach a certain size .these eggs are then made to mix with male sperms in special culture media and environmental condition. If everything works out well then the male and female gamete fertilize to form embryos which at a later stage are instilled into the female genital tract.
WHAT IS ICSI?
There are conditions when the sperms are either very few or too weak to be able to fertilize the retrived eggs. In such cases the embryologist injects the sperm directly into the egg to cause both their nuclei to meet and be fertilized.
